With Memorial Day approaching this weekend and summer on its heels we’re all looking forward to getting out in the beautiful weather and enjoying a wonderful local meal. Of course the challenge often becomes finding a good lunch or dinner that won’t sabotage an entire week of healthy habits. Fortunately, our neighborhood restaurants have made a commitment to providing healthier menu options and Body Wise Fitness has scoured some of your favorite local eateries from Onset to Falmouth to give you all the delicious details.
So let’s begin in our own backyard at The Lobster Trap in Bourne. The Trap is a true local favorite known for its amazing seafood and equally amazing views. You’ll often be tempted by the boiled lobster or fried scallops (and by all means indulge on occasion) but hopefully you’re also ordering one of their delicious healthy entrees. The Maine Salmon with bok choy in a coconut ginger broth and the Pesto Swordfish served on a bed of greens with heirloom tomatoes and mozzarella are both great options. Add a heart healthy glass of red wine and you will leave both happy and satisfied.
Across the bridge or down in Falmouth everyone knows and loves Quahog Republic. By their namesake they obviously know how to make a delicious New England Stuffie, we can’t argue that it’s not one of the best around. But you can also opt for their yummy veggie burger (sans bun) with a side salad and chilled light beer to keep the calories in check. Enough in fact that you could absolutely indulge in a little raw bar of your liking. If you’re in their Onset location you can enjoy views of the harbor, but just be advised not to take my seat at the outdoor bar rail on any given Sunday.
If it’s a healthy lunch destination you’re looking for then we suggest a Bourne townie favorite- The Daily Brew in Cataumet. The vibe inside is local coffeehouse meets college town café and the line often literally runs out the door. We totally get the draw because Daily Brew offers wide a variety of hip and healthy food options. Visitors can pick from a menu of blended smoothies, fresh brewed coffee, breakfast items and clean eating sandwiches and wraps. Our favorite is the Greenhouse Wrap with spinach, assorted veggies, sprouts and roasted tomato aioli on your choice of wrap. You could take it to-go but we suggest taking a seat and enjoying the scene.
Finally, when downtown Falmouth and a craving for Mexican food comes calling you know that you’re heading to Anejo. We INSIST you order the table-side made guacamole but after that you can lighten it up with their Shrimp and Avocado Salad on a bed of Bib lettuce with mango, cukes and red onions. This allots plenty of room for a DE-LI-CIOUS Skinny Margarita (seriously, you gotta have one) without all the guilt and trust me, you won’t be disappointed.
We’re so fortunate to have the variety of great restaurant options in our area that we have and it’s important that we support them. Of course it’s also important to stay within a range of balancing our indulgences and healthier lifestyle. Now, with all these delicious menu recommendations you don’t have to compromise.
